I have written a Chrome extension that will alert you whenever a new topic is created on SFF.

The alert will appear in the bottom right of your screen and if you click it, it will open the topic in your browser.

You will only receive one notification per topic, even if you close your browser, or restart your machine.

It's fairly basic just now, but I think it is useful. I wrote it primarily for myself, but I hope that others find it useful too.

Let me know what you think.

Has anyone installed this yet? If so, what do you think?

Just added it now. I'll let you know if it does anything. It popped up the Europol thread as soon as I installed it.

It just popped up "Scottish Cup quarter final draw". That doesn't seem right, especially when I've just checked and the new topic was actually about Celtic's Champions League squad.

I can see why you would think that. The feed it comes from is refreshed every ten minutes on the server. The extension checks that feed every ten minutes. Chances are you will see the Champions League topic popup in a few minutes time.

The timings are based on a best guess by myself. I could make the extension check every five minutes if you think that would be better. I could also make the feed refresh every five minutes.

Yeah, you're right, it did pop up later.

On a more serious note: have you considered using RSS?

Just tried it out. Works well.

Would be nice if it went to first unread entry rather than beginning of thread.

I would need to work out how to write a firefox extension first. I use Chrome myself, so that was the priority.

The extension uses this RSS feed - http://forums.scotti...-latest-topics/ .  The forum has loads of RSS feeds which you can subscribe to.

If you click it, would you not normally be going to the first post anyway? I could quite easily make it go to the first unread post. Maybe one day I could make an option to decide how it loads a page.

Can you make it go away automatically after, say, ten seconds? It's a usefully notification thingy, but it might get distracting at work having to close it manually each time.

That sounds like a good idea.

I will release version two in the next few days.
Reduce checking time from every ten minutes to every five mins
Hide notification after ten seconds

Someone else said they received that error. You have to login using your google account to download it. That is a bug with google's site and not with my extension.
