Maybe the new darts played a part in the defeat. That and the fact he played very little darts while on his retreat.

Is Phil Taylor's star starting to lose a bit of its gloss? MVG appears to be the new power of world darts. Taylor's been a fantastic player/champion for many many years and as is life there is always someone better around the corner. Ageing has no friendships when it comes to sports.

He is using new darts, so I don't think we should jump to conclusions too quickly. Remember that he had a poor performance in the world championships the year before last, then won it.

Also, he was averaging just over 100 last night. That isn't Taylor's usual standard, but it's still very good.

Not jumping to conclusions. But by his standards a 0-7 defeat is shocking. Last time he lost by a white wash can you say? I can't. Lost the world title in the first round? Gloss is dulling mate.

7-0 is shocking for him.

7-0 is the headline, but sometimes it is simply because your opponent is too good, not because you are playing poorly.

It turns out that he didn't get an average of over 100, so I was wrong.

Player averages on the night

  1. MvG 109.59
  2. Barney 108.52
  3. Anderson 100.71
  4. Taylor 99.45
  5. Lewis 99.13
  6. Wright 97.53
  7. Chisnall 93.87
  8. Newton 93.75
  9. Thornton 93.28
  10. Whitlock 86.31

Taylor didn't do too badly compared to others.

However Lewis, Wright & Chisnall all below him all won mate.

You are right. My point is that he played to a level that could have beaten others. It was just that he was up against someone playing exceptionally well.

Another defeat for Taylor though he played well. Lewis looked good. Also, good win for Gary Anderson.

Thornton did very well until the last leg. A draw was a possibility until then.

See the Power was beaten again last night....7-4 by Peter Wright. Big Mike kept a 100% winning start. Robert Thornton beat Gary Anderson & Adrian Lewis lost. Has Phil Taylor lost that aura of 'greatness' ?...Hmmmm.

Thornton vs Anderson was the match of the night for me. Thornton was on fire. He had something like 8 180s. He was playing so well, yet Anderson was still holding his own.

Taylor seemed to be throwing the darts like I would. They were more lofted, rather than flung, and they seemed to landing diagonally, rather than straight in. At least two of his darts bounced out due to the strange impact angle. Wright had switched his darts after having a bad week last week, and the change clearly didn't affect him negatively last night. In fact, he said he had a 9 darter in practice the day before.
