F1 starts up again in the next hour or so, tbh I lost all interest in it last year and didn't really watch any of it, but I'm told this season it might be better. Time will tell...

the new F1 season starts this weekend and Operations Manager - Sport Trading Bob Craddock reports from the Ladbrokes Coral pit lane to tell us where customers are putting their money.

Last season Nico Rosberg edged out Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to take the Formula 1 World Championship crown, with the rest way behind. Rosberg then went on to sensationally retire from the sport, seemingly opening the door for an easy ride to this year's championship for Hamilton. However, ahead of the first race of the season in Australia on Sunday, Bob tells us this isn't necessarily what the betting suggests will happen:

"The betting suggests that this year's championship will almost certainly be a more open heat than we've been used to in recent years with three constructors looking like genuine contenders and six drivers trading at 10/1 or shorter. The early money was all for Hamilton (1/1 with Ladbrokes, 5/6 with Coral to win the Drivers' Championship) and Mercedes (2/5 with Ladbrokes, 4/11 with Coral to win the Constructors' Championship), as you might expect, but since the latest round of testing we've seen some smart money for Sebastian Vettel (7/2) and Ferrari (3/1 with Ladbrokes, 10/3 with Coral) so they're definitely worth keeping an eye on as the season gets underway."
Looking further ahead into the season, it's clear which races will drive our biggest turnover:
"The British Grand Prix is comfortably the busiest race of the year for us with over twice as many customers placing bets on that race than any other, barring Monaco which runs it fairly close," said Bob.
So where should we put our own money? Bob handed off to our resident F1 expert Denis Yousuf for his considered opinion:
"There looks to be some each-way value on Max Verstappen (7/1 with Ladbrokes, 15/2 with Coral) for the Drivers' Championship. The car will be good over the course of a full season and race wins should be spread around more evenly than in previous years. He may start slowly but will be thereabouts come November. My pick for the Aussie GP is Sebastian Vettel (3/1with Ladbrokes, 11/4 with Coral). Lewis Hamilton (5/4 with Ladbrokes, 11/10 with Coral) called Ferrari favourites earlier this week and while this may be mind-games, the bigger price on Vettel is the one to go for."

More races, more friction in the future for F1

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)

The new owners of Formula One are planning to have more races and a greater presence in North America, and wouldn't mind revving up the ratings with some extra friction among drivers.
Sean Bratches, the managing director of commercial operations for the Formula One Group " formerly Liberty Media " which took over the running of the sport in January, is already fielding offers from promoters wanting to buy in.
Lewis Hamilton has suggested Miami and Daniel Ricciardo picked Las Vegas as places they'd like to see new races, and Bratches told a news conference Friday that "there's no dearth of interest in bringing Formula One to circuits, both track and street, around the world."
Bratches said he'd had a "number of inquiries from cities, states, municipalities and countries around the world that are interested."
There are 20 races on the 2017 calendar, starting with the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, and concluding with Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. The debate over the number and location of races has been frequent over the last decade.
F1 racing returned in 2012 to the United States, where it is held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, in October.
While the bulk of the races remain in Europe and Asia, there are also GPs in Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
"Our interest is in expanding the number of circuits in that marketplace, leveraging Austin " our incumbent and the benchmark in terms of what we're doing in the States," said Bratches, adding there was clear demand for it in North America. "We're excited about all markets around the world, but the United States is going to be a focus."
Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Ricciardo, an Australian who finished third on the season standings last year, are among the drivers who'd like to see more than 20 races in the F1 series. Veteran Fernando Alonso also doesn't mind the idea of expansion, although maybe not for a few years.
Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who has won four world drivers' titles, thinks 16 to 20 would be enough. All agreed that expansion was pointless unless it increases the level of competition. Hamilton and Mercedes dominated the last three seasons, and Red Bull was dominant for the four seasons before that.
There's always been driver tension in F1, usually between teams but also involving teammates vying for championships. Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who edged Hamilton for the title last year and then retired, had an openly strained rivalry at Mercedes since 2013.
That's something former ESPN executive Bratches doesn't mind.
Responding to a question about the drivers being overly-managed by public relations people, Bratches said: "There's a number of sports where there's big personalities that allow sports to punch above their respective pay grades."
He said the drivers were a big part of the fan engagement.
"Candidly, I would love it if more of the drivers had big personalities, there was more controversy among the drivers " and you kind of unleash them a little bit," he said. "I think that's good for all of us."

Azerbaijan GP: Fernando Alonso & Stoffel Vandoorne to start at back of grid

Do these draconian rules make sense?

The race will probably be just another 200mph procession.

Lewis Hamilton had what he called 'the lap of his life' to start on poll in today's race.

Vettel is a tosser. I watched bits of the race and before the 1st safety car Hamilton was over 3 secs in front. To someone like me who is ignorant of the rules it seems very unfair that such a lead is eliminated  when the safety car is introduced....and 3 safety cars. I switched channel and Hamilton was still in front but when I went back he was 8th ?....Didn't know what happened until later on.

Yes, the safety car can result in the race leaders being unfairly penalised.

You'd think with all the technology that's available they could find a way to maintain the time differences so as to avoid that problem.

Easy win for Hamilton and glad to see cheating Vettel losing out in the last lap.

Great race by Bottas and the young Ricciardo
