I was pretty sure there was a thread about this already but can't find it.

Xfm posted on twitter a few options such as:

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Strokes - Is This It?
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

What would your choice or choices be?

I'd have:

Kasabian - Kasabian
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Oasis - Definitely Maybe

Others that deserve a mention:

Stereophonics - Word Gets Around
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Get Born - Jet
Youth & Young Manhood - Kings of Leon
We'll Live And Die In These Towns - The Enemy

Some good choices there Jay, couldn't really argue with any of them. Good about with Jet, very much a forgotten about band these days.

I'd have to add

Coldplay - Parachutes
U2 - Boy (obviously)
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Guns n'Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pearl Jam - Ten
Editors - The Back Room

I've always been surprised that Jet have not become more popular here.

Some good choices in the thread so far. I often find that bands debut are their peak. It must have something to do with them having true desire to make it as an artist and putting their all into it. It's not always the case, but seeing some of the examples in here confirm it.

Can't think of anything that isn't listed here already. Oasis, Coldplay, U2, The Killers... all of them are in my CD collection and currently on my iPod as well. Maybe I'll throw in Glasvegas self-titled album. I haven't really taken to their second album.

I totally agree with the bit about debut albums often being a bands best. I find it rare that a second album is better than the first.

Good choices those. I had forgotten about them.

I think you got another topic there Jay. Bands that released quality debut albums (dare I say critically acclaimed) and top it with the second one.

I would think there are many bands that would apply too . As much as In the city is a great debut the Jams follow up albums were even better . The likes of Sound Affects , All Mod Cons and Setting Sons were brilliant . Good bands get better as they develope their sound . More Specials is a better album than the first one , Performance and Cocktails is better than word gets around , The list is endless tbh .

I've started the thread now.

@ ?ape - I reckon Word Gets Around is better than Performance and Cocktails.

I love Traffic off Word Gets Around. The first time I saw Stereophonics though was just after Performance and Cocktails came out. It was at Barrowlands and was bouncing.
