Following on from the thread 'tight or sensible' I was struck by ?apester's comment about how couples should share their finances. I have often been surprised how often couples do not share their finances, partners often decide which bills each pays, many seem to have seperate bank accounts instead of a shared bank account. So for all you folk out there in a long term relationship (or those who aren't but have an opinion) do you think finances should be shared?

My opinion is that regardless of which partner earns the most a shared bank account is best, all money in and all bills out of one account, everything shared equally, I find it difficult to see how it could work any other way, and its often embarrasing seeing couple bicker over who pays this time at supermarket checkouts or wherever

I've never been in a relationship where I've felt finances should be shared with joint bank account to be honest.

I think it's down to the people though. I'd always prefer separate bank accounts, but for some people maybe a joint one would be the favoured option.

Can't think why though - don't they trust each other enough to have separate accounts? Or, is it a case of lacking trust when people DON'T have a joint bank account...?

I have a shared bill account, but other than that, its seperate accounts all the way. The likelihood of Scottish Football Forums being here today would be very slim if it wasnt coming out of my own back account

Bills come out my account, she gives me a share of those bills. Probably could do a joint account, but at this point it's just a pain in the arse to change it.

If I want to be silly and piss my money away on a night out, then I want it to impact me and only me. I wouldnt want the pressure of knowing that I am spending my partners or families money.

For me its particularly when a relationship has moved on to the point where the couple live together, maybe joint own a home, have kids etc, I just don't see how it works with seperate finances, imagine it in a conversation'you pay the gas and electric, I'll pay the food bills and petrol' no, no, no that;'s not fair, why should I 'well you make more money than I do so you should pay the bigger bills' etc etc

Well, as per the other thread on money and relationships, my one properly serious relationship, when we actually lived together, was one in which I paid all of the bills and generally spent the money on her.

I've not had a relationship more serious than that one, and even then it was only 2 years - and I haven't had kids, or actually OWNED a house with someone, so maybe it's just my age that affects my view.

Me and Mrs Bundy have the one account. All money goes in and out there......it works for us and it's less hassle. If I was single there's no way I'd have a joint account though

It depends really. The server, domain and predictor prize money is consistent, but the advertising income is not. On average maybe £30-40 down.

Aye , per month. It's not always easy, but I also really enjoy the banter on here. I'm a regular user and an admin in one.

2 shared accounts and 2 individual ones, 1 for all the regular bills (mortgage, council tax etc.) 1 for day to day stuff (groceries, money for kids things, the odd takeaway etc). Individual accounts containg our "own" money for the month too.

Took us a few years to go down this route but it was a good decision, I'm not great with money to be honest but at least I now know if I blow it all on the 1st of the month all the other bills will be covered.
