Quite a funny story emerging today that Paulo Sergio actually didn't realise that the St Johnstone match at Tynecastle in the Scottish Cup would go to a replay, until everyone started leaving at the end.

Of course it seems ridiculous that nobody would have told him, or that he wouldn't have looked this up - but then if it had never been flat out explained to him, I began wondering why would he assume a replay would take place?

He says he just presumed that a cup tie would go into extra time and penalties, like in his own country. And to be honest, from what I know, most European countries either play a cup match to a finish or they play it over 2 legs.

He probably assumed that the League Cup format applied to the Scottish Cup too - considering our game with Ayr went to extra time and penalties earlier in the campaign.

But what would YOU prefer in the Scottish Cup?

A change so that it matched the League Cup, where matches were played to a finish first time around, through extra time and penalties?

Or continue with the replay system?

I have to say I quite like the replay format, especially for smaller clubs, you can maybe earn a draw with a big team and then have the financial reward of a second tie.

Or would they look at it in a way that they missed a chance to then get past the bigger team in extra time or on penalties?

Replay as it is......Ross County's winner in injury time in the cup against Hibs is enough to sway it for me ;-).......and the main reason is that it does give smaller clubs the chance of a replay with a decent crowd and a good pay out.

Yeah, I like the replay option as well. It's good that it distinguishes between the two knockout tournaments as well. I never understood why it was the case when it got to the later stages at neutral venues, but they've scrapped that a while ago now.

On that note, the last time a Scottish Cup final went to a replay was in 1981. Rangers beat Dundee United 4-1 in the replay after a 0-0 draw.

The replay is a great money spinner for all clubs, but I agree that it is the smaller teams that benefit most, especially if they are up against SPL opposition.

The one critisicm is that the first leg(can i call it that?) loses some of the cup bite, because both teams know that a draw is ok, because they can try again in the replay. Obviously not all games are affected by the potential for a replay, but some are and for me the cup is all about the all out attack that you get when a club is chasing the game and know they MUST win to progress.

My vote is to decide it on the day via extra time and penalties. No to replays.

I like the replay option as it can sometimes benefit the smaller club.

Yeah, I THINK it was @splstats (it usually is) but I couldn't find it again to give credit!

Still a good stat, but not mine.

Votes leaning towards sticking with the replays. I guess Paulo will just have to get used to them ;)
