is anyone surprised by this?

He's been off the booze for 3 months now so good luck to him. Not convinced he will stay off it as he was apparently taken to AA by a friend. Not that I know too much about it, but surely he needed to take that step?

Alcoholism is a horrible disease and will only ever be cured if the individual wants it. There is no way you can persuade someone, or force them into it, they have to want it. Someone very close to me, now deceased due to drink, managed to have a week off the drink and the side effects of that are horrific and would force most people back onto the drink to make it stop. Anyway, she had a week off and then to celebrate, she had a half bottle of vodka. "It's ok because its only a half bottle and its a celebration", obviously its not ok, but if they dont truly want to come off it, they will slip back without even knowing it.

I have also had people close to me afflicted by this terrible disease, addictions are terrible things, we all have then to some degree, some more than others, smoking, drinking, gambling, drugs, eating, sex, whatever it is, and some people seem to have a compulsive disorder that makes them more susseptible to addictions. Goram surely falls into the category of flawed genius such as Gascoigne, Best et al, How many games did he save Rangers with his genius?? or Scotland for that matter, my abiding memories of him were his unbelievable saves that had Van Hooijdonk shaking his head in disbelief and an Aberdeen fan trying to deck him on the pitch because he got so frustrated at his great form, hope he pulls through
