Scott Brown is not shy when it comes to bigging up Mulgrew. Is he right, is Mulgrew currently one of the best defenders in Britain?

Quote

Brown said: “I see Charlie every day in training and he’s been one of our best players this season.
“He definitely deserves his Scotland call-up and if he is selected I think he’ll do his country and himself proud.
“If you look at Charlie now, he’s progressed in leaps and bounds. He’s flying and I don’t think any centre-half in Scotland or even Britain is playing as well.
“Charlie’s probably one of the best centre-halves I’ve played with and he’s versatile. He’s also got a left foot to die for.
“His left peg really is dynamite. Anywhere from 20 to 30 yards out he’s always going to put the keeper under pressure.
“On the ball, he’s probably one of the most technical centre-halves about. The way he’s been playing I think any big team in England would happily snap him up.”

I dont think he is anywhere near the best central defender in Scotland, but I do think he is finally showing that he is an integral part of the celtic team. I bigged him up on the podcast, specifically for his inclusion in the Scotland squad.

Not anti Celtic as far as i can see.

without question :geek: :geek: :geek:

He has come on massively and way beyond what I expected. When he first came back and was playing right back he was murder. It was only when he was moved to left midfield (I think in an Old Firm game) that he suddenly found his feet and has kicked on. Not one of the best defenders in Britain though but proving to be a vital member of the Celtic squad at the moment.

Who would you have as the best central defenders in Scotland just now?

Lot's of what Brown said is true in that he has been playing well and come on as a player since returning to celtic. Best in britain currently (or in general), not a chance in hell.

He does deserve his call up though.

Apols Craig,

I was going to stick a smiley after my first post and thought no, I'm using them too much, let him squirm  .

He's a decent centre half, a decent left mid, and a reasonable left back. The versatility alone should be enough to have him in any Scotland squad.

Personally, I don't think he's the best centre half we have (I'd suggest at the moment that's probably Rogne), he's definitely not the best left back we have (Izaguirre when he's fit) and we have about a million options for midfield that I'd play before I played Mulgrew there. My preference for him in the Celtic team at the moment would be left back until Izzy's fit, and then put him along side Rogne.

None of these are Scottish though, and as far as the options there go... yeah, lets try him at left back to start with.

I've got man flu....can't believe I posted right back  ....would you have him at left back before Ledley? (I do prefer Ledley in left midfield and also rate Rogne as our best centre back at the moment).

At the moment, yes, purely because I'd rather Ledley was in midfield. But if it was a straight choice between the two, I'd go for Ledley.

solid at CB , prefer him as a left mid, dont like him at LB.

he isnt one of the best in UK imho, but up there in top 2 or 3 in scotland.

passing out from defence check
wins headers check
wins tackles check
good reading of the game check

compared to a experienced swedish CB, who is slow, cant jump, loses out on headers to smaller players, can be turned quicker than a door knob.

but he isnt as good as broony iss making oot!

i like him in LM whipping balls into the box and he has an eye for passes into strikers, but in SPL terms he is solid enough at CB.

one of the most improved players at celtic in last 2 years for me.

He's playing as well as any defender in Scotland just now but he's hardly up there with the best. Showing the form now that looked possible before his move to Celtic

agree - he has been consistently up their with performances and deserves his squad place. However, longer term I don't think he will be a CH for Celtic as I see the first 3 being Wilson, Rogne and the new Polish boy when he comes in. However, at momnet the jersey for his club is one to lose and one to win for his country
