ok, ok, when I was a kid there was always an edge to Aberdeen Rangers games, I remember looking down on the beach end where the Rangers supporters were when Jock Wallace was newly installed as manager in 1983, you could hardly see the grass verge behind the goals for the coins thrown, the bitterness between the clubs was perpetuated by the Durrant thing, shame for the lad, but I do remember the compensation claim being upped several times and the way it was reported in the north east, the papers also felt the compensation claim changes came right on the eve of the fixture between the two clubs, stoking up the hatred, not saying it was true, but it was how it was reported. Moving into the 90's and what Aberdeen fan could forget Hatley assaulting Watt, leading to a 2-0 win for Rangers, the John Brown comments about Aberdeen fans, the Winters coin incident to name but a few all add up to a dislike of Rangers, also I was brought up in an environment where it was normal to watch a Rangers game against well...........anyone and support the opposition, aprt from in Europe, I did support them in Europe as they were flying the flag for Scotland. Now before some Rangers fans go rabid at the mouth with anger, I am not saying my dislike for the team is rational, far from it, but most of us will admit a dislike of some team or other I am sure. Aberdeen have also been pretty poor in their behaviour with Rangers too, ie a fan trying to deck Goram on the pitch, the Rangers team bus being stoned in the past etc etc. All that said I may enjoy Rangers bashing or gloating at times, but I have praised Rangers on this forum too, and can I leave you with this too, an old post I will add when I first started posting on SFF where Celtic fans thought I had it in for their team, never heard the Rangers fans getting upset with my comments then, funny that
post 396 on the thread 'hypothetically if Rangers ceased to exist'
if sheeny does not accept these reasons (and I'm sure there are other reasons, these were just a few of my one of the cuff) then that is his problem not ours
And before he gets pedantic on posting whichh he has done this week, the thread is locked so I couldn't quote it properly
Your post mentions specific unsavoury incidents between the clubs but doesnt give any rhyme nor reason really. Most if not all of that came after the hatred started.
At least you put some effort into attempting to explain it. I'll give you that.
Must pick you up on the bit highlighted regarding watt.......assaulted ? Reason for the 2-0 win?
I was at the game that day and have seen numerous re-runs and I cant recall the incident at all. There were 3 defining moments in that game and none involved Hately / watt contact......Ghilhouse missed a great chance of a header from 6 yards at 0-0.........Hately powered a header past watt from 8 yards............slack pass back from scott boothe allowed Mo Jo in on goal, watt fumbled the weak shot and hately rolled the ball in from 10 yards.......
Aberdeen lost the league that day to a better team on the day.....they also lost out on a few cups around that time to the better team...
Perhaps you have inadvertantly given me my greatest insight into the 'hatred' of Rangers by aberdeen fans....
........its easier to hate Rangers as some kind of sick self justification rather than admit you lost fairly and squarely to the better team
.....perhaps its easier
