Larkhall Thistle Junior Football Club were founded as a Junior Club on 17th April, 1878, and so are the oldest Junior Football Club in Scotland. Three names were put forward for the side-Larkhall Celtic,Caledonian or Thistle with the last one adopted.
The first game ever played was on Loch Park at the top of Machan Road and the gate drawings amounted to 14/3d. After playing on various sites the club moved to the present site at Gasworks Park in 1881 with a 8000 capacity and have played there ever since in their distinctive red and white colours.
Few players visiting Larkhall today realise that it is the only Junior park to have hosted Scottish Junior Cup finals, the first being in 1888 when the club was honoured to be asked by the SJFA for permission to host the final between Wishaw Thistle and Maryhill with Wishaw winning 3-2 and the gate amounted to £30 which delighted the SJFA.
Maryhill appealed the result succesfully and won the replay 2-1 again at Larkhall. The saga did not end there and a 2nd successful appeal this time by Wishaw saw the third replay take place at Ibrox with Wishaw eventually winning 3-1. The Junior Cup returned the next season for the Burnbank Swifts-West Benhar game ending in a 4-1 win for the Swifts.
Thistle have played in the Lanarkshire,Glasgow,Intermediate, and Lanark and Lothian Leagues before joining the Central League and lastly the West Region and have won every major honour with the exception of the West of Scotland Cup where they have twice lost in the final.
A total of 39 trophies have been won with 25 runners up positions secured. The Scottish Cup has twice found its way to Gasworks Park, in 1908 when a Nisbet goal clinched victory over Queens Park at Meadowside (thought to be near Cathkin Park) with Cathkin the venue in 1914 when Larkie beat Ashfield 1-0 with a Stuart goal. Before these successes, the club club were defeated 3-0 by Parkhead at Celtic Park in their first ever final appearance in 1903.
Larkhall are credited with rearing the most players to be capped for Scotland at Senior level - 13 and Bob Crampsey in fact confirmed in 1988 that Larkhall are the Junior side that has produced the most amount of players to step up to the Senior ranks. It would be interesting to find out if that record still stands today. Five former players went on to captain their country- Alex Raisbeck (Liverpool),Jimmy Hutton (Aberdeen),Jimmy Carrabine (Third Lanark), Andy McLaren (Preston) and Willie McStay (Celtic) while among other Scottish Internationalists is Wembley Wizard Jimmy Gibson who left Gasworks Park for Aston Villa.Other Larkie legends include Gibsons father Neil, who went on to captain Rangers and represented Scotland as did Firhill favourite Tommy Ewing and Lisbon Lion John Clark who both started out at Larkhall.
