Neymar needs to grow up. He's been in the game long enough to know that opposing players will often try and wind him up, especially if they are not at the same level as him. He needs to rise above it. His manager should have a word with him about the failure to shake Ralston's hand.

but he didn't actually 'lunge' at the opponent.....he was specifically going for the ball with his boot raised high. So if 'excessive force' is debatable should it still be red ? All about opinions.

It would be really useful if the ref himself could tell us why he sent him off.

Had look at the rules re this and found....

  • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
  • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off

when 'endangers the safety of an opponent' excessive force must be present. Was there 'excessive force used in Mane's challenge ? Personally don't think so so imo a yellow should have been shown.
I like when the rules comes out. If only pundits did that.

Another bit.

"Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the
front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force
and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."

I think he lunged. I think he endangered safety of the opponent. Excessive force is debatable, but then the resulting injury suggests it was.

Nani's situation was somewhat different. The opposition player seemed to run into Nani's foot from behind,

As for Mane; I have to disagree with your assessment. Yellow yes, red no.

You're right about the Nani situation. I was using it as an example of a boot to the face being a red card involving outfield players.

Serious foul play includes endangering the safety of an opponent by lunging in which is what I think it was. But, like many rules its open to interpretation. Neville was too quick to say the ref has ruined the game as if he had made the worst decision ever.
