Cheltenham Festival Tipster Competition 2017

The festival is here and will start at 1.30pm tomorrow to the sound of the famous Cheltenham roar. We will be treated to four days of class racing and we are guaranteed of a great spectacle. There will be joy ,tears, tantrums etc but what we must remember is to have fun too. So let’s all enjoy one of the greatest showpiece on earth and what better way than to enter into the tipster competition.

Those that have played before will know what to do but have a close look as I've introduced places this year (at Hoopz request)

How it works

On each day of Cheltenham pick one selection from each race, and post them up here before the start of the first race of each day. This year we will be using a point based system based on a theoretical £1 Each Way bet on your selection, so if you have a 10/1 winner you will get £14.50 return or if your horse gets a place you will get a £3.50 return.

Your selection will be settled on the SP (Starting Price).  If I  have not received a selection for any of the four days, or if your selection is declared as non-runner that's -£2 per race.

To make it simple I will use 1/4 odds for a place and use the Sporting Life website for the official results and the number of places given. (i.e not some crazy bookie like Paddy Power who will hand out more places...)

The winner will be determined by who has the highest return for the week over the four days. In the event of a tie, the number of wins will determine the eventual winner.

Craig is our current Cheltenham champ 2016!

Good luck to all

Golf rules changes

02 March 2017 - 07:48 PM

The Royal and Ancient and United States Golf Association are proposing a raft of rule changes to golf, to me it seems about right as they have not really changed anything for many years

Among the changes under consideration are plans to:

  • Remove any penalty for accidentally moving your ball.
  • Relax the protocols for taking free or penalty drops, with the ball dropped from only an inch above the ground, rather than shoulder height.
  • Use fixed distances (20 or 80 inches) rather than club lengths to measure areas where a ball should be dropped.
  • Reduce the time allowed to search for a lost ball from five to three minutes.
  • Allow putting on the green with the flagstick left in the hole.
  • Allow players to repair spike marks and animal damage on greens.
  • Automatically allow the use of distance measuring devices.
  • Ban caddies from lining up players as they prepare to hit.
  • Recommend no player takes more than 40 seconds to hit a shot.
  • Encourage players in strokeplay to implement "ready golf" rather than waiting until it is their turn to hit.
  • Empower committees to set a maximum score for a hole (such as double par or triple bogey) to allow a player to pick up and move to the next hole.

The last one here will be good for the average golfer I reckon, as nobody likes a double figure hole bursting your scorecard.
